Full Moon Day
Today is a Buddhist holiday called Makha Bucha. Honoring an important event in Buddha’s early teaching life, it’s celebrated during the full moon day of the third lunar month. The spiritual aims of the day are: not to commit any kind of sins; do only good; purify one’s mind.
Thazin & I decided to use our day off to explore Doi Suthep mountain. Due to a blend of 6 AM brain, language barriers & a general lack of preparation – we were lost from the beginning. We never did find the hiking trail to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, but instead stumbled upon a peaceful morning procession of almsgiving & merit making. & further up the mountain – waterfalls.
We hiked, sat on rocks, awed at the abundance of flora, ate apples & collected little red seeds. Making our way down we were offered & accepted a ride back to Chiang Mai in the back of a truck. We broke to relax, eat & nap. Later we’ll convene again to observe the holiday’s temple candle-light processions. A fine holiday indeed.
